Boxes for chickens

Boxes to transport chickens

Chicken crates

Crates for chicks and boxes for chickens can be made of plastic or cardboard – plastic chick boxes are a lot more expensive than cardboard chick crates. When your day old chicks arrive they will most likely be in a cardboard chicken crate – 100 chicks per box. If you are free range egg farming you will need egg cartons or egg boxes to sell your eggs in – these are also made from cardboard or plastic. When you buy chicken crates you will need to buy at least 200 units – all the manufacturers of these boxes require quantities – and prices range from R15 – R28 per crate in cardboard. If you are concerned about the environment – ask for crates that use recycled materials – the green economy is the way forward – and will be the way all future business is run. Chicken houses, or green chicken houses have not yet become a reality – but they will as large companies recognise the benefits of a sustainable way of poultry farming. A green chicken house will use wind driven fans, solar panels and will recycle the chicken waste into methane driven heating units – the technology already exists and is being used in South Africa – it is fairly costly but some farmers are already getting good results and are saving money on their operational costs.
